Dr Herman Kruger matriculated at Paul Roos Gimnasium in Stellenbosch in 1978 and commenced studying dentistry at the University of Stellenbosch in 1979. After qualifying as a dentist, he served in the South African Defence Force as a dental officer and worked overseas as a dentist before returning to South Africa to study medicine at the University of Stellenbosch in 1987. He completed his medical degree in 1990. He then completed his internship at Provincial Hospital in Port Elizabeth and worked as a medical officer at Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth in the disciplines of General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Casualty and Anaesthetics until 1994 when he returned to Stellenbosch to commence post graduate studies in the specialty of Maxillo-Facial and Oral Surgery. He completed the post graduate exams in Maxillo-Facial and Oral Surgery through the College of Medicine and after registering as an Oral andMaxillo-Facial Specialist, he started private specialist practice and in the part-time public service in East London in 1999. He is one of a few Maxillo-Facial and Oral Surgeons in South Africa that holds both a medical and dental degree.
He is currently in private practice and a sessional senior specialist in the public service as a Maxillo-Facial and Oral Surgeon at Frere Hospital in East London, where he is responsible for training junior Doctors and Dentists. He regularly lectures Dentists and Doctors and is a registered CPD (Continuing Professional Development) provider for Doctors and Nursing Staff. He has also presented studies at international congresses and has a special interest in Maxillofacial and Oral Pathology, in particular Odontogenic Pathology.
Dr Kruger was elected to the Executive Committee of the South African Society of Maxillo-Facial and Oral Surgeons, (SASMFOS), in 2006 and served the society as honorary treasurer until 2010. He regularly attends local and international congresses and lectures and is up to date with the latest surgical techniques, materials and research. He is an active member of SASMFOS and the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, (IAOMS), as well as the South African Dental Association, (SADA).
Dr Kruger works closely with and has a good relationship with other medical specialists (i.e. Ear-, Nose- and Throat Surgeons, Neurosurgeons, Orthopedic Surgeons) and Dental Specialists (i.e. Orthodontists, Prosthodontists, Periodontists) and will refer you for treatment if indicated to benefit your general health.
