Non-Surgical Cosmetic Procedures

Non-Surgical Cosmetic Procedures

As one ages, facial skin naturally loses some of its elasticity and starts to sag. Additionally, there are the appearance of lines and wrinkles. It is also natural for skin to stretch and lose some of its youthful volume and plumpness. Non-surgical cosmetic procedures are performed to fight the signs of ageing such as facial wrinkles and loss of connective tissue, by injecting dermal fillers and botulinum toxin.

What is the difference between dermal fillers and botulinum toxin injections?

Botox is the brand name for Botulinum toxin type A injections. It is commonly used in minute quantities to reduce facial wrinkles, as it causes temporary relaxing of the underlying muscles resulting in smoothing of the overlying skin and reduction of fine facial lines. Patients can normally see the result within 4-5 days, and the effects should last for 3-4 months where after the treatment should be repeated if you want to maintain the appearance. Botulinum toxin injections work well for fine lines between the eyebrows, around the eyes, and on the forehead.

Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are used for the smoothing plumping up effect to treat sunken areas due to ageing. It is also used to improve facial features such as plumping up the lips and eyebrows. Temporary dermal fillers are made up of hyaluronic acid, and the body will resorb it after injection into the skin. The effect will last for 18-22 months. It can also be used for a so-called “liquid” face-lift in which case it is injected in selected areas to create a younger facial appearance. Dermal fillers can also improve the appearance of scars.

Who is more suitable for Botox and filler treatment?

Those who do not want to go under the knife and look dramatically different are suitable for this treatment.

The most common dynamic wrinkles that Botox can treat are the lines caused by smiling, laughing, frowning, squinting and facial expressions. Some patients start managing the subtle laughing lines on the side of the eyes in their 20’s, but treatment is not age-specific.

Facial fillers are ideal for static facial wrinkles or grooves that appear when your face is relaxed and not showing any expression. Areas that are sunken in will benefit from the fullness that facial fillers create.
